Luxembourg plans to strengthen its support for Ukraine in 2025 by increasing military and defense aid by 50%. This was stated by Luxembourg’s Minister of Defense, Yuriko Backes, while speaking with journalists ahead of the NATO defense ministers’ meeting in Brussels.

“We want and need a just and sustainable peace. Ukraine is the first to strive for this. Putin could have stopped this war yesterday, he can do it today. But that is not happening. Therefore, Luxembourg will continue to provide military support to Ukraine – we have been doing this since day one. This year, we will increase our contribution to military and defense aid by 50%, so that Ukraine can continue to defend itself. We will remain on the right side of history,” she said.
Luxembourg’s Position on Supporting Ukraine
The Minister of Defense emphasized that the country has consistently supported Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale war, and the increase in aid aims to ensure that the Ukrainian side can effectively defend its territorial integrity. According to Yuriko Backes, Luxembourg remains committed to a just peace and is ready to continue supporting Ukraine in its fight for independence.
Meetings in Brussels and New Initiatives
On June 5, the NATO defense ministers’ meeting is ongoing in Brussels. On the same day, a meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council is scheduled, where further steps to support Ukraine by allies will be discussed.
Additionally, following the recent meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, which took place in the “Ramstein” format, Ukraine’s Minister of Defense Rustem Umerov announced the launch of a new strategic initiative aimed at attracting investment in the country’s defense industry. This initiative is expected to enhance the capabilities of the Ukrainian defense industry and provide sustainable support for the state’s defense needs.
