Summit in Anchorage: Expectations and Plans
On August 15, a summit will take place in Anchorage, Alaska, featuring US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. This will mark the first personal contact between the Russian leader and the sitting American president since 2021. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 11:00 local time, which corresponds to 22:00 Kyiv time.
Donald Trump stated the day before that the goal of the summit in August is to prepare for a possible subsequent meeting involving Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin. According to the US president, such a meeting in Alaska could happen soon and would be even more significant than the negotiations between Trump and Putin.
US President Donald Trump stated that the goal of the summit in Alaska on August 15 is to prepare for this second possible meeting, which, as the US president suggests, could also be held in Alaska “very soon.” This meeting would involve both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump indicated that it would be more important than his summit with Putin.
Ukraine’s Position and Reactions
Volodymyr Zelensky will not participate in the summit between the US and Russian presidents in Alaska. The Ukrainian leader has previously emphasized that the state has no intention of “giving away its land to anyone,” and the Armed Forces of Ukraine will not leave Donbas. Kyiv insists on receiving clear security guarantees in the event of any agreements with the Russian side.
Russian President’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that it is too early to predict the outcomes of the summit, and the signing of official documents following the negotiations is not planned.
