In the territory of the National Nature Park “Holosiivskyi,” ecologists have discovered an extremely rare species of mushroom that is included in the red lists of 12 countries around the world and is protected by the Bern Convention. This mushroom is called Myriostoma coliforme and is a close relative of the so-called “earth stars.”
Features of the Rare Mushroom
Myriostoma coliforme impresses with its unusual appearance: the upper layer of its fruiting body opens into distinctive “rays” that lift the spore ball above the ground. This gives the mushroom a resemblance to a model of a space station, distinguishing it from other representatives of the fungal kingdom.
According to ecologists, this finding in Holosiivskyi Park is the second of its kind, although even in areas with strict conservation policies, this species of mushroom is extremely rare.
The Importance of Preserving Biodiversity
“We ask visitors to be careful and not to damage the habitats of this mushroom. Each such finding helps scientists better understand and preserve the biodiversity of our park. If you are lucky enough to see it — enjoy, take photos, but leave the mushroom in nature,” the park encourages.
Experts emphasize that each appearance of Myriostoma coliforme is valuable for researchers and contributes to the study and preservation of rare plant species in Ukraine. Visitors are urged to treat the park’s natural treasures with respect and help preserve its unique biodiversity.
