Nariman Dzhelyal, the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of Ukraine to Turkey, has officially commenced his duties after presenting his credentials to the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The solemn ceremony took place at the Presidential Palace in Ankara.

During the ceremony, Dzhelyal emphasized the significance of the event and thanked the Turkish side for their warm welcome and support. He expressed confidence in the further strengthening of the strategic partnership between Ukraine and the Republic of Turkey for the benefit of both nations.
“Today, I had the honor of presenting my credentials to the President of the Republic of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. This officially grants me all the powers to operate in Turkey as the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of Ukraine. I am grateful for the very warm welcome and expressed support. I am confident that together with our Turkish friends, we will continue to develop and strengthen the strategic partnership between Ukraine and the Republic of Turkey for the benefit of our peoples in the name of peace and prosperity,” Dzhelyal wrote.
Diplomatic Status and Biography of Dzhelyal
The presentation of credentials is a key diplomatic step that confirms the official start of an ambassador’s mission in the host country. Nariman Dzhelyal’s appointment to this position was first announced by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, on December 20, 2024, with the corresponding decree published in May 2025.
Dzhelyal is also known as the first deputy chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people. After the occupation of Crimea by Russia, he remained on the peninsula and actively defended the rights of Crimean Tatars. In September 2021, he was arrested by representatives of the FSB of the Russian Federation on charges of sabotage, after which he received a 17-year prison sentence. At the end of June 2024, Dzhelyal was released from Russian captivity along with nine other civilian prisoners.
