Negotiations on Prisoner Exchange Between Ukraine and Russia: New Progress Expected

переговори тривають, в найближчі тижні очікується «додатковий прогрес»

U.S. Special Envoy Donald Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, commented on the recent prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia, emphasizing the importance of trilateral negotiations and efforts aimed at achieving peace.

Prisoner Exchange: Details of the Agreements

According to Witkoff, the exchange was made possible due to prolonged and substantive peace negotiations initiated by the U.S. President. These discussions have been ongoing for several months and are aimed at creating conditions for a complete cessation of hostilities between Ukraine and the Russian Federation.

“This exchange was achieved through lengthy and detailed peace negotiations under the direction of President Donald Trump. Under the President’s leadership, we continue to achieve meaningful results, working towards formulating a peace agreement that will put an end to the war once and for all,” he wrote on social media platform X.

Throughout January and February of this year, several rounds of trilateral negotiations involving Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia took place. Although the specific outcomes of these meetings were not officially disclosed, an agreement was reached during the negotiations on February 5 regarding the prisoner exchange — the first such exchange in the last five months.

Exchange in March and Prospects for Further Negotiations

On March 5 and 6, Ukraine and Russia conducted another prisoner exchange: 500 Ukrainian soldiers were released from Russian captivity. Preparations for this operation took place during negotiations in Geneva in February of this year.

However, the scheduled trilateral meeting this week in the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi, has been postponed indefinitely due to the escalation of the situation in the Middle East. Despite this, the parties continue consultations, and Steve Witkoff expressed hope for new progress in the negotiations in the coming weeks.
