The Netherlands has reacted positively to U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal regarding the sale of American weapons to Ukraine. Dutch Foreign Minister Kaspar Veldkamp stated that the country is already actively participating in military support for Ukraine, particularly by providing Patriot systems and F-16 fighter jets. He emphasized that the government is ready to consider further assistance options in accordance with Trump’s statements.

International Support for Ukraine

Veldkamp noted that he welcomes the alignment of positions between the U.S. and European countries regarding support for Ukraine. According to him, in the context of ongoing hostilities, it is important to increase pressure on Russia. The minister stressed that Russian President Vladimir Putin is deliberately dragging out the negotiation process, and therefore the West must act decisively.

“We view this (Trump’s proposal – ed.) positively. The Netherlands is already doing a lot, including providing Patriot systems and F-16 fighter jets… We will see what we can also do in connection with Trump’s statements, and we will take further action,” said Dutch Foreign Minister Kaspar Veldkamp to reporters before a meeting with EU foreign ministers in Brussels.

Reactions from International Partners and Analysts

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell expressed concern over the duration of the peace agreement deadline proposed by Trump, emphasizing that “50 days is a very long time, considering that innocent civilians are being killed every day.”

On July 14, Donald Trump announced during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte his intention to provide Ukraine with military assistance worth billions of dollars, including Patriot air defense systems. He also mentioned the possibility of implementing 100% secondary tariffs on Russian goods if a peace agreement is not reached within 50 days.

American analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) believe that an effective combination of economic pressure and military support from Western countries could compel Russia to engage in negotiations and strengthen Ukraine’s position on the battlefield.
