In honor of the 39th anniversary of the tragic events at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center has presented a short documentary film titled «April 26, 1986». The film was created in collaboration with the National Museum «Chernobyl» and is dedicated to one of the most horrific man-made disasters in human history.

The new documentary recounts the events that unfolded in the early days of the disaster, the echoes of which are still felt today. According to the press service of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, “39 years ago, a catastrophe occurred at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, the consequences of which are still felt today. Radiation enveloped cities, countries, and lives. It was an explosion not just of a reactor – it was an explosion of an era. Among those who immediately faced the disaster were hydrometeorologists.”
The film features the memories of liquidators-hydrometeorologists: Oleksandr Dezyron, Oleg Skoropad, and Leonid Tabachny. Their stories are testimonies of courage, responsibility, and the extraordinary role of meteorologists in mitigating the consequences of the disaster. They worked on the front lines of danger, recording radiation levels, constructing contamination maps, and updating data that guided rescuers, military personnel, and governments.
“In the film for the anniversary of Chernobyl, we have gathered the memories of liquidator-hydrometeorologists – Oleksandr Dezyron, Oleg Skoropad, and Leonid Tabachny.
