History and Significance of the Film

The new documentary recounts the events that unfolded in the early days of the disaster, the echoes of which are still felt today. According to the press service of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, “39 years ago, a catastrophe occurred at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, the consequences of which are still felt today. Radiation enveloped cities, countries, and lives. It was an explosion not just of a reactor – it was an explosion of an era. Among those who immediately faced the disaster were hydrometeorologists.”

The film features the memories of liquidators-hydrometeorologists: Oleksandr Dezyron, Oleg Skoropad, and Leonid Tabachny. Their stories are testimonies of courage, responsibility, and the extraordinary role of meteorologists in mitigating the consequences of the disaster. They worked on the front lines of danger, recording radiation levels, constructing contamination maps, and updating data that guided rescuers, military personnel, and governments.

“In the film for the anniversary of Chernobyl, we have gathered the memories of liquidator-hydrometeorologists – Oleksandr Dezyron, Oleg Skoropad, and Leonid Tabachny. Their accounts are testimonies of time, responsibility, and courage. And today, in the context of war, when the enemy threatens our nuclear facilities, Chernobyl reminds us again: safety comes first. And so does memory.”

According to experts, without accurate weather data, it would have been impossible to make the right decisions during the disaster response. Ukrainian meteorologists risked their lives to obtain this vital information. They worked in extreme conditions to help save lives and minimize the damage from the catastrophe.

This film serves as an important reminder of the heroism and responsibility of the specialists who fought against the aftermath of the disaster, and it underscores the relevance of ensuring the safety of nuclear facilities in contemporary conditions.
