Support for Air Defense and Cooperation with Partners
According to official information, Norway has supplied a significant number of air defense missiles to ensure that the NASAMS systems, developed by Norwegian engineers, continue to effectively protect Ukrainian skies.
“Norway has recently provided Ukraine with a substantial number of air defense missiles to ensure that the NASAMS systems developed in Norway continue to protect Ukraine,” the statement said.
The supplies are being carried out in cooperation with the United States, Canada, and Lithuania, which have also provided Ukraine with NASAMS systems. According to the Norwegian government, these complexes have proven their effectiveness in combating Russian missile strikes.
Priorities for Assistance and High-Level Contacts
In January, the first meeting took place between Norway’s Defense Minister Tore Sandvik and his Ukrainian counterpart Mykhailo Fedorov following Fedorov’s appointment. According to Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, support for air defense remains one of Oslo’s main priorities in assisting Ukraine. Under the Nansen program for 2026, Norway has allocated over 7 billion euros (85 billion Norwegian kroner) for civilian and military assistance to Ukraine.
Defense Minister Tore Sandvik emphasized that the missiles were transferred in collaboration with partners to enhance Ukraine’s protection against “deadly air attacks.” Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide added that due to Russian attacks, significant areas of Kyiv have been left without heating, water supply, and electricity, and Ukrainians suffer from missile and drone attacks almost every night. He highlighted that a recent meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv confirmed the necessity of such assistance for protection against aggression.
It is worth noting that the Ukrainian side has not yet officially commented on the missile transfer.
The NASAMS complexes remain one of the key elements of Ukraine’s air defense, used to repel air strikes from the Russian Federation.
In addition to military assistance, on January 12, Norway’s Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide announced in Kyiv the provision of an additional 4 billion kroner (approximately 17 billion hryvnias) to support the energy sector and ensure the stable functioning of state structures.
