The renovation of one of the oldest city fountains, located in the Literary Square in the Shevchenkivskyi district of Kyiv, has been completed. After the restoration work, this historical site has once again become a highlight of the square, returning to its usual rhythm and providing aesthetic pleasure to the residents and visitors of the capital.
History and Architectural Value of the Fountain
The fountain in the Literary Square is a unique monument of engineering architecture, created in the late 19th to early 20th century. It was made of cast iron at the Kyiv Machine-Building Plant of Oleksiy Termen, based on the design by the chief architect of Kyiv, Oleksandr Shile, between 1869 and 1871.
“From now on, the fountain will once again adorn the square and delight the residents and guests of the capital.”
Relocation and Modern Appearance
Initially, this fountain graced Sofia Square, but in the 1920s, it was moved to the Literary Square at the intersection of Oles Honchar and Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi streets. Since then, the fountain has remained an important architectural landmark of the area and one of the symbols of historical Kyiv.
After the renovation was completed, the updated fountain has once again become a popular spot for walks and relaxation, highlighting the cultural heritage of the capital.
