Support for Ukraine Remains a Priority

During a meeting with international journalists in Warsaw, Sikorski emphasized that the opening of the first cluster of negotiations regarding Ukraine’s EU accession and the unblocking of European funds by Hungary, which compensate for the provision of weapons, are the main tasks for Poland as the next country to preside over the Council of the European Union.

The minister also commented on the statements made by newly elected President Nawrocki regarding priority cooperation with the Visegrad Group countries, including Hungary, highlighting the official position of the Polish government that the president should adhere to.

“If Nawrocki can convince Viktor Orban that Ukraine should be supported, that these vetoes should be lifted, that Ukraine must be integrated into the EU, we will be very pleased and will support the newly elected president on this matter,” the minister stated.

Expectations from the New President of Poland

Sikorski reminded that in his first interview, which Nawrocki gave to media associated with the Hungarian Prime Minister, the president confirmed the importance of deterring Russia. The minister also emphasized that Nawrocki represents the Law and Justice party and that most current defense contracts were signed under the previous government, so he expects the continuation of defense support.

Among other expectations from the new head of state is the strengthening of cooperation with the United States of America. Sikorski noted that Nawrocki has already received confirmation of support from the White House. According to the minister, Poland can effectively work with various partners simultaneously.

It is worth noting that 42-year-old Karol Nawrocki, head of the Polish Institute of National Remembrance, supported by the opposition Law and Justice party, won the second round of the presidential elections held on June 1. According to official data from the electoral commission, Nawrocki received 50.89% of the votes.
