The Contribution of Four-Legged Partners in the Fight Against Drug Crime

During the first 11 months of 2025, the canine units of the capital’s police, along with their four-legged partners, conducted over 130 operational missions aimed at detecting and seizing narcotic substances. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of law enforcement and specially trained dogs, a significant amount of illegal drugs has been found.

“This is the result of 7 dogs that serve alongside the canine handlers around the clock. Meet the four-legged team: Labradors Leo and Norma, Malinois Chase, German Shepherds Thor and Kasta, as well as Spaniels Ornella and Coconut,” the Kyiv police communication department reported.

The service dogs, together with police officers, are on duty at checkpoints, in the capital’s metro, and participate in authorized searches and special operations. Thanks to their professional training and keen sense of smell, the canine team has repeatedly assisted in quickly locating drug hideouts in various locations throughout the city over the year.

Discovered Drugs and Concealment Methods

Since the beginning of 2025, the service dogs of the Kyiv police have aided in the seizure of over 50 kilograms of drugs, including heroin, cocaine, amphetamine, Alpha-PVP, methadone, and cannabis. According to law enforcement, drug traffickers are constantly inventing new ways to disguise illegal substances; however, specially trained dogs effectively find even the most carefully hidden drugs.

“Despite the ingenuity of drug traffickers and the concealment of their ‘products,’ the four-legged detectives perform excellently and locate their targets regardless of the circumstances – whether hidden among household items, in specially designed hideouts, in the most remote corners of vehicles, or camouflaged under stones and buried deep in the ground,” the police noted.

Thanks to the professionalism of the canine handlers and their four-legged assistants, the capital’s law enforcement continues to successfully combat the spread of drugs in Kyiv.
