EU plans to strengthen sanctions and support for Ukraine
Kallas stressed that one cannot rely on the commitments of Russian President Vladimir Putin, therefore security guarantees must be strong enough to prevent further aggression from Russia. She noted that the European Union plans to support these security guarantees in various ways, including through training Ukrainian military personnel, as well as strengthening Ukraine’s army and defense industry.
“Everyone is committed to a strong peace that protects the vital security interests of both Ukraine and Europe.”
New sanctions package against Russia will be ready by September
According to Kaia Kallas, the EU will not stop applying pressure on Russia’s military economy. She announced that the next sanctions package against Moscow will be prepared by next month. The diplomat also added that these issues have become key items on the agenda for discussion among the EU foreign and defense ministers, whose meeting is scheduled for next week.
In turn, President of the European Council António Costa held a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after the summit. During this conversation, the leaders discussed new sanctions against Russia and further steps regarding Ukraine’s Euro-integration.
