The massive shelling of the Ukrainian capital that occurred on the night of the last days demonstrated the deliberate choice of the Russian Federation to further escalate the war and ignore peace initiatives.

European Leaders Condemn Russia’s Aggression

The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, emphasized the unacceptability of continued violence in her statement on social media platform X and called for dialogue. The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, also firmly condemned the actions of the Russian Federation, calling them “senseless aggression,” and confirmed that the building of the EU delegation in Kyiv was among the targets hit.

“Russia must stop the killings and start negotiations,” Kallas stated.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, reported that the staff of the EU representation in Kyiv remained unharmed. She also urged the Russian Federation to immediately cease strikes on civilian infrastructure and engage in negotiations for a just peace.

Increased Security Concerns in Europe

The EU Ambassador to Ukraine, Kateryna Maternova, stressed that the attack on the EU representation indicates that the war has directly affected the interests of the EU. According to her, no one can feel safe – neither peaceful families, nor children, nor EU representatives in Kyiv.

“The war has touched the European Union. And no one can convince me that this was not Putin’s intention. No one is safe. Not families in their homes. Not children in their beds. Not those representing the EU in Kyiv. Putin will stop at nothing. He bombs, destroys, kills. This is not a military operation. This is terror,” wrote EU Ambassador to Ukraine Kateryna Maternova on her Facebook page.

The incident has received wide international resonance: Belgian Foreign Minister Maxim Prevot and Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas publicly condemned the indiscriminate Russian strikes on Ukraine, emphasizing solidarity with the Ukrainian people and support for the territorial integrity of the state.
