Spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Georgiy Tikhiy, commented on May 2 regarding the statement from the US State Department about the United States’ refusal to mediate in negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. He reported that after inquiries from the media, he contacted State Department spokeswoman Tami Bruce, who confirmed that her statement regarding the role of the US as a mediator was made in the context of a similar comment made earlier this week:
This is reported by Kyiv24
“If there is no progress, we will step back as mediators in this process”
.
Georgiy Tikhiy noted that this is not a new position but rather a reiteration of previously stated assertions by the US Secretary of State. He added that the day before, State Department spokeswoman Tami Bruce emphasized that American diplomats “are not going to fly around the world to be mediators at meetings”, and called on Ukraine and Russia to “develop concrete ideas” for ending the conflict. It is also known that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned on April 29 that in the absence of specific proposals from the parties regarding the cessation of the war, the United States would withdraw from its role as a mediator.
