A petition has been launched in Kyiv for the renaming of the street

Residents of the Holosiivskyi district of the capital have proposed changing the name of the street that still bears the name of the Russian poet Vasily Zhukovsky. They are calling on the city authorities to finally rid the city of imperial toponyms.

The petition has garnered support from city residents

An electronic petition has already been published on the official portal of the Kyiv City Council. The authors of the appeal emphasize that back in December 2022, a lane named after Vasily Zhukovsky in the same district was renamed to Leopold Yashchenko Lane. However, the street itself still retains its old name, which, according to the initiators, is associated with the history of the empire.

In light of this, the petition signers propose conducting a public survey through the “Kyiv Digital” platform to choose a new name from the list pre-selected by the Naming Commission.

Next steps for renaming

Residents of the district hope that the city authorities will consider the community’s opinion and bring the issue to public discussion. If the petition receives the required number of signatures, it will be reviewed by the relevant commission of the Kyiv City Council, which will determine a list of possible new names for the street. The final name selection is planned to be conducted through open voting on the “Kyiv Digital” online platform.

The voting, as envisioned by the initiators, will allow for the opinions of as many Kyiv residents as possible to be taken into account and will contribute to the further decolonization of urban toponyms.
