From July 16 to September 10, audiences at the Zhovten cinema in the capital will have the opportunity to watch five landmark Ukrainian films from the 1960s and 1970s. The screenings will take place as part of the new retrospective “Poetic Cinema. Blooming,” which is a continuation of the previous series “Poetic Cinema. Origins,” organized by the Dovzhenko Center in the spring and early summer.

Retrospective Program and Thematic Focus

This time, the focus is on films that laid the foundation of national cinema and defined its poetic trend. All five films to be shown at Zhovten are considered classics of Ukrainian cinema and form the core of the film canon from the 1960s and 1970s. The program includes: “Stone Cross,” “Evening on Ivan Kupala,” “The White Bird with a Black Mark,” “Zahar Berkut,” and “The Lost Letter.”

“Each screening will be preceded by an introduction from film scholars at the Dovzhenko Center. They will not only provide additional context for each film but also help establish a general line of continuity in the poetics of Ukrainian cinema, which has been identified as the main theme for 2025.”

Details on Screenings and Ticket Purchases

The screenings will open with the film “Stone Cross” directed by Leonid Osyka, which premiered in 1968. The premiere screening is scheduled for July 16. Tickets for individual sessions are already available for purchase on the official website of the Zhovten cinema.

The organizers emphasize that each film will be accompanied by commentary from leading film scholars, who will help deepen the understanding of the historical and artistic context of the selected films and trace the development of the poetic tradition in Ukrainian cinema.
