On July 3, the Russian army launched a missile strike on the Odesa port area, resulting in the deaths of two people and injuries to six others. This was reported by the head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration, Oleg Kiper. According to him, Russian troops used a ballistic missile that hit the port infrastructure of the city.
Details of the Attack and Victims
Among the deceased are a dock worker and a truck driver, whose identities have already been established. Six others were injured, including employees of one of the port operators, a driver, and two citizens of Syria who are crew members of a civilian vessel. All the injured are receiving the necessary medical assistance. According to the Minister for Communities and Territories Development, Oleksii Kuleba, the Iskander missile struck near one of the berths of the Odesa Sea Port during the unloading of metal from a foreign vessel flying the flag of São Tomé and Príncipe.
“Two people have died. One of them is a dock worker, the other is a truck driver. My sincere condolences to the families of the deceased. Six others were injured, including employees of one of the port operators and a driver. Two others are citizens of Syria, members of the crew of a civilian vessel. All necessary assistance is being provided to the people,” he reported.
Infrastructure Damage and International Reaction
As a result of the attack, portal cranes, equipment, and warehouses were damaged. Minister Kuleba described the shelling as confirmation that Russia is “deliberately trying to destroy transport hubs, export capabilities, and the lives of peaceful citizens.” He emphasized that free and safe navigation should be the norm, and the international community must respond firmly to such targeted attacks on civilian infrastructure.
Additionally, it was reported that the night before, Russian drones struck a nine-story residential building in Odesa. This resulted in a fire that engulfed the upper floors. Two children were hospitalized with smoke inhalation, while adults received assistance on site.
Russian forces regularly carry out strikes on Ukrainian regions using various types of weaponry, including kamikaze drones, missiles, aerial bombs, and multiple launch rocket systems. The Russian leadership denies targeted attacks on civilian objects, but Ukrainian authorities and international organizations classify these strikes as war crimes and emphasize their deliberate nature.
