A Russian missile struck the production complex of Flex in Mukachevo, which is one of the largest employers in the Transcarpathian region. Andriy Zhupanin, a member of the “Servant of the People” faction, emphasized that this incident proved that the presence of American businesses in Ukraine does not guarantee protection from Russian aggression.

The Presence of Foreign Businesses Does Not Protect Against War
“When Ukraine was being pushed to sign the subsoil agreement, we were told that American companies would be in Ukraine, thus we want to forgo any real security guarantees. We were told that there would be American companies, and accordingly, we do not need any security guarantees because they could be more guaranteed than the activities of American companies on Ukrainian territory. As you can see, this does not work,” he said on the air of Radio Liberty.
Zhupanin noted that despite the attack, the economic situation in the region is not undergoing critical changes, as the budget of Transcarpathia does not depend solely on one enterprise. Nevertheless, the event has negatively impacted the psychological state of the local population: “there is a clear understanding that there is not a single safe region.”
Until this time, Transcarpathia was considered one of the safest regions in the country, as there had been almost no strikes in the area since the beginning of the full-scale war. Zhupanin emphasized that there are no borders to war, and even natural barriers such as mountains cannot protect people.
Massive Shelling and Consequences for the Region
Flextronics (Flex) confirmed the damage to its plant in Mukachevo. Company representative Conor Phillips stated that the consequences of the attack are currently being assessed and emphasized that the enterprise was exclusively engaged in the production of civilian electronics.
During the nighttime attack on August 21, Russian troops carried out a massive shelling of Ukraine, using 574 drones and 40 missiles, among which were four air-launched ballistic missiles Kh-47M2 “Kinzhal.” According to the Air Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, 546 Russian drones were destroyed, along with one “Kinzhal” missile, 18 Kh-101 cruise missiles, and 12 “Kalibr” cruise missiles.
As a result of this shelling, at least one person was reported dead in Lviv, along with injuries in several regions. In Mukachevo, a “Kalibr” missile hit a civilian enterprise, which turned out to be the American company Flex, providing jobs for thousands of residents in the region. The city’s mayor, Andriy Baloga, clarified that this plant was the target of the Russian military’s attack.
