The occupiers are striving to establish themselves in the cities before the frost sets in

Russian troops are attempting to capture a number of settlements in eastern Ukraine before winter begins. The main goal is to avoid spending the winter in the open fields, which poses significant risks for them.

Spokesman for the Ukrainian Volunteer Army, Serhiy Bratchuk, stated that the enemy is intensifying its efforts to advance in cities such as Lyman, Siversk, Pokrovsk, Kostiantynivka, Toretsk, Chasiv Yar, and Kupiansk. According to him, the Russians aim to enter these cities, establish themselves there, and conduct combat operations in urban conditions throughout the winter.

“It’s October, then comes November, winter… The trend is that the enemy is trying, in my opinion, to enter all our cities, both small and quite large: Lyman, Siversk, Pokrovsk, Kostiantynivka, to pass through Toretsk, Chasiv Yar. Well, and actually, Kupiansk,” said Bratchuk.

Dynamics of combat operations and enemy tactics

Bratchuk emphasized that as of October 2025, the situation on the front remains dynamic, and the Russian army is trying to maintain a high pace of combat operations, not stopping its attempts to advance. He stressed that the occupiers are looking for weak points in the Ukrainian defense, but every kilometer of territory comes at a great cost to them.

The military also noted that Russian troops find it extremely difficult to recover their forces after losses, and fighting in the fields makes them an easy target for Ukrainian defenders. That is why the occupiers are trying to occupy cities where they have a better chance of holding positions during the winter campaign.
