Actual Loss Figures and Assessments by International Analysts

Official Moscow does not disclose current data on its own losses. The last time Russian authorities reported the number of casualties was in September 2022, stating that there were 5,937 victims.

Journalists from the Russian publication “Mediazona,” the Russian service of the BBC, and a team of volunteers were able to identify the names of 204,626 Russian soldiers who died since the beginning of the invasion in February 2022 from open sources in March 2026. At the same time, as the journalists note, this list is not exhaustive, as far from all information about losses becomes publicly available.

“As journalists note, the list is not complete, as information about the deaths of not all servicemen becomes publicly accessible.”

International organizations and intelligence agencies provide even higher estimates. In December 2025, a senior NATO official, speaking on condition of anonymity, reported that, according to Alliance data, the total number of killed and wounded in the Russian army could approach 1.15 million people.

Ukraine has long refrained from disclosing its own losses; however, President Volodymyr Zelensky now reveals the relevant data annually. In February 2026, in an interview with France 2, he confirmed that since February 2022, 55,000 Ukrainian servicemen have died. The head of state also reported a significant number of missing persons.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, emphasized on January 13, 2026, that in 2025, the Armed Forces of Ukraine managed to reduce personnel losses by 13%. He did not specify details regarding Ukrainian losses.
