Shmyhal Discussed the Purchase of Artillery Shells During Meeting with Kallas

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal held a meeting with Kaia Kallas, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs. This important conversation was reported on April 10.

Shmyhal thanked the EU for its ongoing support, particularly for Kallas’s initiative to allocate 40 billion euros to Ukraine for enhanced military assistance. “We discussed Ukraine’s urgent defense needs. I emphasized the importance of purchasing 2 million artillery shells for Ukraine. I highlighted the significance of implementing the ReArm Europe plan, as well as the swift launch of the SAFE instrument, which amounts to 150 billion euros,” he noted.

Defense Procurement and Sanctions Policy

The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of allowing Ukraine to participate in joint defense procurement with EU countries, both in the European market and within Ukrainian companies. Additionally, during the meeting, the parties discussed further strengthening the sanctions policy against Russia.

“Together with Ms. Kaia Kallas, we reaffirmed our joint position: no peace without justice. We emphasize that efforts for a just and lasting peace must be based on the principles of ‘nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine’ and ‘nothing about Europe without Europe.’

On the eve of this meeting, the head of the EU’s foreign policy service, Kaia Kallas, also announced that the European Union would provide over 2 billion euros from frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine.
