Main Components of the Military Package
According to Sánchez, Spain will soon allocate 300 million euros to supply Ukraine with weapons. An additional 100 million euros will be directed to the NATO PURL program, which will allow for the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine. Furthermore, 215 million euros is allocated through the European Union’s SAFE instrument, which will finance the production of anti-drone systems, radars, and other equipment, a significant portion of which is manufactured by Spanish companies.
“I have already told Zelensky that within a month, Spain will approve a new military aid package worth 615 million euros. This package will primarily include weapons worth 300 million,” said the head of the Spanish government.
Infrastructure Reconstruction and Further Cooperation
In addition to military support, Spain has announced the creation of a new financial instrument worth 200 million euros, which will be used for the reconstruction of Ukrainian infrastructure damaged by attacks from the Russian Federation. The coordination of this program will be managed by a special office that will begin operations in Spain within two months and will facilitate the restoration of critical infrastructure facilities.
As President Volodymyr Zelensky noted, during negotiations with Sánchez, the main focus was on defense cooperation issues. Zelensky emphasized that in the context of ongoing Russian attacks, Ukraine values Spain’s assistance, particularly in the field of air defense. The President also highlighted the importance of the PURL program, which enables the purchase of missiles to protect Ukrainian skies.
Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Spain on November 18 included meetings with the King, the Prime Minister, and representatives of the Spanish defense sector. This is the third visit by the head of the Ukrainian state to Spain since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
