The supply of American ammunition has been suspended not only for Ukraine but also for several other countries. This was revealed in a comment from a source in the White House. According to him, this decision is part of a large-scale review initiated by the Pentagon at the request of President Donald Trump, which Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth began several weeks ago. The purpose of the review is to ensure that the distribution of weapons aligns with the interests of the United States.
International Reaction and Possible Solutions
It is noted that some other countries have also been excluded from the list of priority recipients of American weapons, although the complete list of these states is currently not disclosed. In light of this situation, Ukraine plans to appeal to the US for permission to allow European countries to purchase American weapons for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Several European governments are already working on relevant plans, anticipating the use of their own defense budgets to acquire armaments. The costs for these purchases may be accounted for in the total defense spending agreed upon by NATO countries at the summit, but no final decisions have been made yet.
The Chairman of the US Senate Armed Services Committee, Roger Wicker, explained that Ukraine is currently requesting not so much financial support as the opportunity to use European funds to purchase American weapons and ammunition.
Suspension of Supplies and Official Positions
It is known that among the suspended supplies to Ukraine were, in particular, missiles for the Patriot air defense systems. This decision was made due to concerns about depleting the US military’s own stockpiles. According to journalists, at the time the decision was made, the ammunition was already in Poland. The list includes over 20 Patriot PAC-3 missiles, more than 20 Stinger missile systems, Hellfire guided missiles, and over 90 air-to-air AIM missiles, as well as other armaments.
US State Department spokesperson Tammi Bruce stated that, overall, the sending of weapons to Ukraine has not been halted:
“This is one aspect, one situation, one event that has changed.”
At the same time, Ukrainian officials report that the US has temporarily suspended the supply of all military aid, including shells and spare parts.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed that the temporary chargé d’affaires of the US in Ukraine, John Hinkley, was invited to the Ministry to discuss key cooperation issues in the defense sector. The main topic of the negotiations was US military assistance to Ukraine amid escalating Russian aggression.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense emphasized that it had not received official notifications from the US regarding the suspension or revision of the schedules for agreed defense aid supplies. The Ukrainian side has requested an additional phone call to clarify the details.
The Kremlin stated that the reduction of weapons for Ukraine allegedly would contribute to the swift conclusion of the so-called “special military operation.”
