Sweden Announces New Military Aid Package for Ukraine

Уряд Швеції повідомив деталі нового пакету оборонної допомоги для України

The Swedish Ministry of Defense has announced the introduction of a new military aid package for Ukraine, amounting to 4.8 billion Swedish kronor (approximately 443 million euros). This news was made public on May 26 during an official announcement by the ministry’s press service. According to representatives, the country’s government had already instructed the army on May 22 to make contributions to multilateral funds and initiatives aimed at enhancing Ukraine’s defense capabilities.

The total amount of this aid is part of the 19th support package, which was approved by the country’s parliament on April 29. As noted by the Ministry of Defense, these funds will support several coalitions within the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, including:

  • Mine Clearance: procurement of equipment for the disposal of mines and explosive ordnance, including mine detectors, transport, and personal protective equipment.
  • Drones: funding for the purchase of various types of unmanned aerial vehicles.
  • Naval Capabilities: training for personnel of the Ukrainian Navy.
  • IT Infrastructure: procurement of equipment to establish the DELTA situational awareness system.

Additionally, the Swedish government plans to allocate another 1 billion kronor (approximately 92 million euros) to support the Ukrainian defense industry through a Danish model for procuring materials and equipment. It is noted that “strengthening Ukraine’s defense industrial base and ensuring supply security is a vital part of the long-term enhancement of Ukraine’s defense capabilities.” Part of the funds will also be directed to support the Czech Republic and Estonia in procuring ammunition.

At the end of March, the Swedish government announced the allocation of 16 billion kronor (1.6 billion dollars) to Ukraine as part of a new military aid package — the largest support the country has provided since the beginning of the Russian invasion in 2022.
