The Acceleration of Ukraine’s EU Membership Discussed at the Munich Security Conference

Сибіга повідомив про консультації щодо місця і формату нової зустрічі зі США і європейськими партнерами

During the Munich Security Conference, the issue of accelerating Ukraine’s accession to the European Union became one of the key topics of discussion between Ukraine and European countries. This was reported by Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha at a press conference.

Hungary Blocks the Negotiation Process

According to Andriy Sybiha, the process of Ukraine’s accession to the EU could be progressing faster, but this path is complicated by Hungary’s position, which opposes and effectively blocks Ukraine’s efforts in this direction.

“Hungary’s shortsighted position completely blocks all Ukrainian efforts in this direction. But the most important thing is that Europe also realizes that Ukraine is needed for the European Union, that Ukraine will bring many advantages to the EU. From security to strengthening Europe’s political-diplomatic and economic positions. For Europe’s self-sufficiency. For Europe’s strategic autonomy. For the defense sector,” the minister stated.

He emphasized the need to define specific timelines for when Ukraine can become a full member of the European Union.

European Leaders and the Date of Ukraine’s EU Accession

European Commissioner for Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, highlighted in a comment on the sidelines of the conference that Ukraine’s EU membership is seen as an important element of security guarantees and could also be taken into account during future negotiations for a peaceful settlement.

Among the conditions of the 20-point peace agreement currently being discussed between Ukraine, the USA, and Russia, a separate point concerns Ukraine’s membership in the European Union, which, according to some reports, could be realized in 2027.

At the same time, there is some skepticism within the EU regarding this date. Olivér Várhelyi noted at the end of January that he cannot guarantee Ukraine’s accession to the EU by 2027, despite the progress made in negotiations. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also believes that Ukraine’s accession to the European Union in the near future is unlikely.
