The Ukrainian government plans to allocate an additional 400 billion UAH for arms procurement

уряд пропонує збільшити витрати бюджету на 400 млрд грн – для закупівлі зброї

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine is initiating changes to the state budget, proposing the allocation of an additional 400 billion UAH to strengthen the support for the Security and Defense Forces. This was stated by the head of the parliamentary committee on budget issues, Roksolana Pidlasa.

Reasons for Increased Funding for the Defense Sector

According to Pidlasa, the growing need for funding is due to a reduction in the volume of arms supplies from international partners in tangible form. The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine is forced to respond quickly to changes in the situation both on the battlefield and in the area of military supplies, so the government is actively seeking additional financial resources for arms procurement.

“The Ministry of Defense is responding promptly to changes on the battlefield and changes in arms supplies from international partners. When there is a pause in supplies, the government quickly seeks funds for procurement to ensure that our troops are constantly supplied with everything they need. In the first half of this year, weapons and ammunition worth over 300 billion UAH were contracted. Now the government and parliament must promptly amend the state budget to fully meet the needs of military personnel and future arms procurements,” the deputy noted.

Sources for Covering Additional Expenses

Pidlasa emphasized that funding will be secured through the overperformance of the budget’s revenue part, including tax and customs revenues, the issuance of domestic government bonds, and grants received as non-repayable assistance.

The government’s intentions to increase the budget for defense needs coincide with information from the U.S. about plans to reduce military support for Ukraine in 2026. U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth reported on these plans during a hearing in the House of Representatives.
