US Position and Europe’s Role
During a conversation with journalists at the White House, Trump emphasized that Washington will contribute to ensuring security, although the details of the relevant agreements have yet to be discussed. The American leader also noted that European countries should play a major role in providing security guarantees for Ukraine, which, according to him, are prepared to offer substantial support to Kyiv.
“We do not know the security guarantees for Ukraine because we have not discussed the details. But we will make our contribution. But if we reach an agreement – and I think we will – there will be no special problems [again, for defense]” – he said at the White House during a conversation with journalists.
In addition, Trump stressed that the US is abandoning further budget expenditures for Ukraine. At the same time, the American side is currently focusing on selling arms through NATO mechanisms.
International Support and Prospects for a Peacekeeping Mission
The issue of security guarantees for Kyiv has become key in negotiations to end the war, especially following the activation of dialogue between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Donald Trump, and European leaders. According to media reports, within the so-called Coalition of Willing, the United Kingdom has proposed to deploy Typhoon fighters in western Ukraine and prepare a brigade of 3,000 to 5,000 soldiers to train the Ukrainian army. France, Canada, Australia, the Czech Republic, and Lithuania are also considering participation in similar peacekeeping initiatives.
Meanwhile, leaders of European countries issued a joint statement emphasizing that any future peace agreement should not limit the activities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine or its cooperation with other countries. They also highlighted that Russia will not have a veto right on Ukraine’s path to membership in the European Union or NATO.
In the context of potential negotiations between the presidents of Ukraine and the Russian Federation, Trump noted that a meeting is unlikely to take place anytime soon due to the personal animosity between the leaders.
