Purpose of the Visit and U.S. Position
According to sources, key representatives of the Russian government may participate in the negotiations, but it is currently unclear whether Vladimir Putin himself will join the meetings. It is known that Witkoff has previously held several discussions with the President of Russia.
Donald Trump has clearly outlined the U.S. position, giving Moscow until Friday, August 8, to make significant progress in ending the war against Ukraine. In the absence of progress, the U.S. President has threatened to impose tariffs and other restrictive measures against Russia. Reports indicate that Trump has expressed his frustration with Putin’s actions.
The Kremlin stated that they have “taken into account” the statement from U.S. President Donald Trump. At the same time, Russian President’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that the “special military operation,” as the war against Ukraine is referred to in Russia, continues.
Discussion of Possible Concessions and Ceasefire
According to information obtained from Bloomberg, the Kremlin is considering making a concession to the U.S. President, specifically regarding the possibility of implementing an air ceasefire with Ukraine. Such a move could be an attempt to avoid the risk of secondary sanctions threatening Russia.
It is worth noting that in the spring, Russia had already declared a ceasefire twice, but according to the Ukrainian side, these agreements were not upheld by Moscow.
