Agenda and Key Issues of the Meeting
According to Robert Fico, organizing the fourth meeting of the intergovernmental commission will be an important step in the development of Ukrainian-Slovak relations. The Prime Minister noted that the Slovak side is already working on the agenda, which is expected to include issues related to the operation of the airport in Uzhhorod. The discussions will also cover a wide range of energy issues, where the countries have both common and differing positions.
“A good sign of progress in our Ukrainian-Slovak relations will be if we manage to organize the fourth meeting of the intergovernmental commission. We propose to do this on October 20 in the territory of the Slovak Republic. Our team is already preparing the agenda,” said Fico.
Energy Cooperation and Positions of the Parties
During the negotiations, the parties discussed the prospects for joint energy projects. Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized Ukraine’s readiness to cooperate with Slovakia in the energy sector, particularly regarding the supply of oil and gas, provided that these are not Russian energy resources. The President highlighted that Ukraine has a surplus of electricity and has even assisted Moldova with electricity supplies during periods of Russian attacks.
Zelensky also noted that cooperation with Slovakia is aimed at ensuring the energy resilience of both countries and their neighbors. According to the Slovak Prime Minister, there are diametrically opposed viewpoints on energy issues between the countries; however, both sides are willing to seek compromises and implement joint projects.
Fico emphasized that his meeting with the President of the Russian Federation in China was not related to the potential energy blockade of Ukraine, but aimed at participating in events dedicated to the anniversary of the end of World War II. He also added that the issue of energy blockade was not raised during the negotiations with Ukraine.
The President of Ukraine stressed that the country will continue to respond to Russian attacks on energy facilities, although Kyiv seeks an end to the war. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine values its partnership with Slovakia, particularly regarding the export of energy resources through its territory, and is ready to contribute to the energy stability of the region.
It is worth noting that during the meeting in Uzhhorod, the parties also discussed Slovakia’s support for Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations, and the negotiations were dedicated to key issues important for both states.
