Response from Ukraine and International Context

In his address, the minister emphasized that Kyiv “strongly condemns the Iranian drone attack” on the US embassy. He highlighted that this attack is a direct violation of international law and the provisions of the Vienna Convention, and noted that such actions are manifestations of the Iranian regime’s policy of terror.

“This brazen attack violates international law and the Vienna Convention and is part of Iran’s policy of terror. Ukraine expresses solidarity with the Kingdom and the United States.”

Sybiha also stressed that Iran must be held accountable for this incident.

Circumstances of the Attack and Escalation in the Middle East

According to local authorities, the Saudi Ministry of Defense has not officially reported the country of origin of the drones that attacked the American embassy. Iran itself has also not acknowledged its involvement in this attack. As a result of the attack, the embassy building sustained minor damage.

Prior to this, the US State Department urged its citizens to leave Middle Eastern countries for safety reasons. American and Israeli forces carried out missile strikes on Iranian territory on February 28, targeting missile infrastructure and military objectives. These actions marked one of the sharpest conflicts between Washington and Tehran in recent years, leading to further escalation in the region.

In response, Iranian military forces conducted missile and drone attacks not only against Israel and US military bases in the region but also against other neighboring countries that Tehran considers allies of the United States. Both military facilities and civilian infrastructure—residential buildings, hotels, airports—were hit. Additionally, military personnel from European countries stationed in the Middle East were attacked. According to official information from the US Central Command, six American servicemen were killed during operations in Iran.

The latest wave of the joint operation by the US and Israel, which began on February 28, resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as a significant portion of the Iranian regime’s leadership.
