Poland is actively strengthening its defense capabilities by purchasing a significant amount of modern weaponry from the United States. This was stated by Poland’s Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski during a conversation with international journalists in Warsaw.

Extensive Defense Contracts Between Poland and the USA
According to Sikorski, there are currently contracts in progress for the supply of American weapons to Poland totaling approximately 50 billion dollars. Among the purchased weaponry are Abrams tanks, HIMARS rocket systems, precision missiles JASSM, as well as 48 F-16 fighter jets. Poland has already received its first F-35 fighter jet, which has successfully completed its flight. Additionally, among the acquisitions are aerostat surveillance balloons, which, according to the minister, have proven to be a successful investment for the Polish army.
“These are Abrams tanks, these are HIMARS, we previously purchased JASSM, we have 48 F-16 fighter jets, and the first Polish F-35 is already flying. We are even buying these aerostat surveillance balloons – by the way, a great idea,” said the Polish minister, noting that the USA remains the main supplier of defense equipment for Poland.
Development of Domestic Defense Industry
In addition to imports, Poland is actively developing its own weapon production. A striking example is the Krab self-propelled howitzers, which are already being used on the battlefield. Sikorski noted that during his visit to the front in Ukraine, particularly to the 26th Brigade near Bakhmut, he witnessed the effective use of these howitzers by Ukrainian troops alongside American Excalibur shells. The minister emphasized that this combination has proven to be very effective for the Ukrainian defenders.
Sikorski stressed the need to develop the European defense industry, especially in light of the increasing defense budgets of EU countries. In his opinion, Europe should focus on producing its own weapons and ammunition rather than relying solely on imports from the USA.
Furthermore, the diplomat noted that the USA is effectively encouraging European countries to independently strengthen their defense capabilities, as part of its efforts are now directed towards the Pacific region. According to the minister, European countries have until the end of the decade to enhance their capabilities for deterring Russia independently.
Regarding assistance to Ukraine, the US Ambassador to NATO, Matthew Vitaker, reported that the Trump administration has not yet made final decisions regarding future support, focusing on maintaining options for halting hostilities.
