The Zhytniy Market in Kyiv has been granted the status of a cultural heritage site

Recently, the historic building of the Zhytniy Market was officially added to the list of identified cultural heritage sites in the capital. This step is significant for protecting the architectural landmark from destruction and unauthorized changes.
Heritage Status and Its Implications for the Zhytniy Market
Architect and co-founder of the initiative “Zhytniy Will Live!” Pavlo Pekar emphasized that granting the market heritage status not only preserves the building itself but also protects the surrounding area. From now on, any changes or interventions in the market space must be approved by the Ministry of Culture and heritage protection authorities.
“Once the site acquires this status – as far as I remember, it includes not only the building but also the surrounding area – the Ministry of Culture and heritage protection become stakeholders. Therefore, everything that happens, any changes or interventions, anything at all – must be coordinated with these bodies. So for us, this is an additional protection against destruction, changes, or any manipulations with this site,” he said.
Prospects for Further Protection of the Market
Pavlo Pekar highlighted that this approach is a positive practice for the city. The heritage status will act as a safeguard against unjustified interventions and will guarantee the preservation of the market in the future. Whether the status will change to national remains to be seen, but this step already significantly enhances the level of protection for the site.
