Key Topics of Discussion in London

During the bilateral talks, the parties discussed in detail security guarantees for Ukraine and ways to achieve sustainable peace. According to the President’s Office, the leaders focused on what specific security mechanisms could ensure the cessation of Russian aggression, should the USA succeed in convincing the Kremlin to abandon violence and engage in meaningful diplomacy.

“The President and Prime Minister discussed the outcomes of yesterday’s online meeting with European leaders, the joint conversation with US President Donald Trump, and the coalition meeting. Today, in a bilateral format, the leaders exchanged views on expectations for the meeting in Alaska and potential prospects. Volodymyr Zelensky and Keir Starmer paid detailed attention to security guarantees that could make peace truly sustainable if the United States can pressure Russia to stop the killings and engage in meaningful diplomacy.”

Expectations from the Summit in Alaska and Ukraine’s Concerns

The UK Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that Zelensky and Starmer had a private breakfast, during which they agreed on common approaches to future negotiations. They emphasized the unity of positions and determination to achieve a fair and lasting peace for Ukraine. Special attention was given to tomorrow’s negotiations between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which will take place in Anchorage, Alaska. The leaders view these negotiations as an opportunity for progress, provided that Russia shows a genuine willingness for peace.

Zelensky’s visit to London came immediately after consultations in Berlin with European leaders and President Trump. Following these meetings, it was stated that Donald Trump promised to make the issue of a ceasefire in Ukraine a key topic during negotiations with Putin, without bringing territorial issues to the table.

At the same time, both Zelensky and European partners express concerns that the interests of Ukraine and Europe may be overlooked during the US-Russia summit. They fear that any agreements risk strengthening Moscow’s position and jeopardizing Ukraine’s future security.

The summit of US and Russian leaders in Alaska will be the first since 2021, when the sitting US president meets with the Russian leader. On August 11, Donald Trump suggested the possibility of “some exchange of territories” between Ukraine and Russia, and criticized the position of the Ukrainian leadership, which emphasizes the need for constitutional approval of such decisions.
