Diplomacy and Security in Focus

The President emphasized that both diplomatic and security prospects were discussed in the conversation with his Estonian counterpart. According to him, Ukraine and Estonia agreed to continue working on a wide range of issues, particularly in the field of security.

“We discussed the preparation for the NB8 format with Ukraine, which will take place in Estonia – we hope it will be truly productive. I thanked Estonia for the support it has provided since the first days of the full-scale invasion.”

Support from Estonia and the Drone Incident

Prime Minister Kaja Kallas confirmed Tallinn’s intention to continue supporting Ukraine in achieving a just and sustainable peace. Kallas specifically emphasized the need to debunk the Kremlin’s illusions that time, fear, or fatigue could lead to Russia’s victory.

On May 19, Estonia’s air defense forces shot down a drone over Lake Vorts’jarv for the first time, located in the southeastern part of the country. The Estonian Minister of Defense stated that it was likely a Ukrainian drone heading towards targets in the territory of the Russian Federation. Final conclusions regarding this incident are to be made by the Estonian Air Force and the Security Police.

Ukraine officially apologized for this incident. NATO noted the response of the Estonian military, which the alliance’s Secretary General Mark Rutte characterized as a “calm, decisive, and proportionate response to such drone incursions.”
