Coordination with European Partners and Expectations from the General Assembly
According to the head of state, the upcoming week will be busy for Ukrainian diplomacy at the UN. Zelensky emphasized the importance of these days providing a new impetus for joint decisions aimed at increasing pressure on the Russian Federation. He stressed that Ukraine is actively coordinating its actions with the leaders of European partner countries to achieve common goals.
“We are planning an active week for our diplomacy at the UN General Assembly, and it is important that this week gives a boost to diplomacy. Right now, a week before the General Assembly, President (Donald) Trump will be in Europe. Our work with the leaders of European countries is very active, so that we are all coordinated and truly achieve decisions to pressure Russia – decisions that will still need to be made,” Zelensky said in a video address on September 15.
Defense Support and Expectations from the USA
Separately, the President of Ukraine addressed issues of defense cooperation. He announced new decisions under the PURL program, which allows Ukraine to procure weapons from the United States. According to him, over 2 billion dollars have already been allocated for these purposes, and another 1.5 billion dollars are expected to be announced soon. Zelensky emphasized that further supplies depend on partners and highlighted the positive dynamics in cooperation with Europe and the anticipation of decisions from the USA, particularly regarding the acquisition of Patriot air defense systems and drones.
US President Donald Trump, for his part, stated on September 14 that he expects a trilateral meeting involving himself, Zelensky, and Russian President Vladimir Putin. He noted that there is an “incomprehensible hatred” between Zelensky and Putin that hinders their bilateral meeting.
