Chrystia Freeland’s Significant Experience for Economic Recovery

Freeland, who has Ukrainian roots and speaks Ukrainian, is known for her experience in attracting investments and implementing economic reforms. Her professional skills and international reputation could make a significant contribution to strengthening Ukraine’s financial stability and supporting reforms during this challenging period of war and recovery.

“Chrystia is professionally skilled in these matters and has considerable experience in attracting investments and conducting economic transformations. Ukraine needs to increase its internal resilience—both for the recovery of Ukraine, if diplomacy works as quickly as possible, and for strengthening our defense, if delays from partners require us to work longer to end the war,” Zelensky wrote in a Telegram message.

Chrystia Freeland’s Career and Activities

In September 2025, it was announced that Chrystia Freeland had completed her role as Canada’s Minister of Transport. She transitioned to a new role as a special international representative for Ukraine. Earlier, in March 2025, Freeland participated in the leadership election of the Liberal Party of Canada, where she lost to Mark Carney. After Carney’s victory in the April elections, Freeland retained her position in the government and continued to perform various ministerial duties she had held since 2015, when the Liberal Party of Canada came to power.

At the time of her appointment, Chrystia Freeland did not provide an official comment regarding her new status as advisor to the Ukrainian president.
