Zelensky Invited Leaders of Regional Countries to Participate in the Ukraine – Southeast Europe Summit

President Volodymyr Zelensky held a series of talks on May 22 with leaders from three Southeast European countries — Greece, North Macedonia, and Moldova. In his social media posts, he noted that the main topic of discussion was the support for Ukraine and increasing pressure on Russia.

Discussion on Support for Ukraine and Sanctions Against Russia

Zelensky reported that during his conversation with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, they discussed the need to continue pressure on Russia and to impose additional sanctions. He emphasized that «strong pressure and additional sanctions against Russia are necessary. No one needs to explain that the war continues only because of Russia’s unwillingness to end it».

Greece supports Ukraine’s position and intends to contribute to increasing international pressure on the aggressor country. Zelensky also highlighted the importance of supporting Ukraine’s defense production and air defense.

“I invited them to participate in the Ukraine – Southeast Europe summit. Kyriakos confirmed that he will come. Thank you”

Cooperation and Preparation for the Upcoming Summit

The President emphasized the importance of cooperation with regional countries regarding European integration. He reported on a conversation with North Macedonia’s President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, particularly regarding the coordination of joint actions in the movement towards EU membership.

Zelensky stressed that “we have a good format for cooperation between Ukraine and Southeast Europe, and we continue to work together for even greater effectiveness. We are preparing for our next meeting — a summit of the leaders of this region. It is important for North Macedonia to be represented at the summit”. So far, Mitsotakis and Siljanovska-Davkova have not commented on their conversations with the President.

Moldova confirmed its participation in the upcoming summit. President Maia Sandu noted that the country firmly stands by Ukraine, supporting its aspirations for peace, freedom, and a European future, and its voice remains strong in multilateral forums.

A year ago, this format of meetings took place in October in Croatia, and a new summit is now expected, which will be an important step in strengthening regional cooperation and European integration.
