Expectations from the Trilateral Meeting
Zelensky emphasized that the main goal of this meeting is to create an opportunity for a real dialogue aimed at achieving a fair peace and a substantive conversation among the leaders of Ukraine, the United States, and Russia. He stressed that it is time to end the war, and the initial steps must be taken by the Russian side. The President also expressed hope for the support of the United States and confirmed Ukraine’s readiness for maximum productive cooperation.
“The stakes are indeed high. The main thing is that this meeting opens up a real path to a fair peace and a substantive conversation among the leaders in a trilateral format: Ukraine, the United States, and the Russian side. It is time to end the war, and the corresponding steps must be taken by Russia. We hope for America. We are ready, as always, to work as productively as possible,” Zelensky wrote on Telegram.
Military Situation in Donetsk and Preparation for the Summit
During the meeting of the Staff, issues concerning the front were also discussed, particularly the situation in the Pokrovsk direction. A decision was made to further strengthen the defense in Donetsk, especially in the direction of Dobropillia, where the 79th and 82nd Air Assault Brigades are demonstrating significant success. Zelensky emphasized that Ukrainian forces are countering attempts by Russian troops to fortify their positions and are increasing pressure on the occupiers.
Particular attention during the discussion was given to positions in the Zaporizhzhia region. The President thanked Ukrainian soldiers for their resilience and noted that the Russian army is suffering heavy losses while trying to improve the political positions of the Russian leadership ahead of the negotiations in Alaska. This information has already been communicated to Ukraine’s partners.
Zelensky also noted that the activity of Russian forces near Dobropillia is aimed at creating a corresponding informational backdrop before the upcoming meeting between the presidents of the United States and Russia, which will take place on August 15 in Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska. The meeting will be held at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base and will start at 11:00 local time (22:00 Kyiv time).
The President of the United States stated that the main goal of the summit is to prepare for the next trilateral meeting involving the leaders of Ukraine, the United States, and Russia, which he believes will be even more significant than the current summit. He also suggested that the probability of unsuccessful negotiations with the Russian leader is 25%.
