Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced his intention to raise the issue of new arms purchases for Ukraine during an upcoming meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the G7 summit, which will take place in Canada. The leaders’ meeting is expected to occur on the sidelines of the summit following Zelensky’s visit to Austria.

Ukraine’s Plans for Defense Cooperation with the U.S.
During a press conference in Vienna after talks with Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen, Zelensky emphasized the importance of discussing defense issues with Trump. The President noted that Ukraine is ready to purchase new weapons and hopes for a productive dialogue with the American leader.
“Indeed, one of the issues I will discuss with President Trump at the meeting regarding the defense package that Ukraine is ready to buy. And we will talk about this with him, and I am confident that we will have such an opportunity, well, at least I hope so.”
Issues of American Military Aid
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth recently stated during hearings in the House of Representatives that the United States plans to reduce funding for arms purchases for Ukraine in 2026. Commenting on these statements in an interview with the American television channel Newsmax, Zelensky emphasized that Kyiv has not received any official notifications regarding this matter. The President of Ukraine described such reports as “painful” and noted that they negatively affect the morale of Ukrainian society.
At the same time, according to the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a reduction in military support from the U.S. will not lead to sustainable peace and will not compel Russian President Vladimir Putin to change his strategy, but will only contribute to the further prolongation of the military conflict.
