Zelensky’s initiative for joint defense
Zelensky believes that security issues should be addressed in close cooperation with partners. According to him, only together can they effectively counter threats from Russia. The President stressed that the mechanisms for joint response should not only prevent drones from falling on Ukrainian territory but also ensure they cannot penetrate the territory of Poland or Romania.
“I believe it is fair to talk about a joint solution. Not just to prevent a drone from falling on the heads of Ukrainians, but to ensure it does not reach the territory of Poland, and that these are decisions made together,” he stated.
The head of state also noted that Polish military forces could use aviation to destroy targets that threaten not only Poland but also the western regions of Ukraine. In his opinion, such a defense system could also be extended to Romania, and Kyiv does not rely on support from other countries.
Reactions from Poland, NATO, and Russia to drone incidents
The issue of Russian drones has become particularly relevant after several unmanned aerial vehicles violated Polish airspace during Russia’s attack on Ukraine on the night of September 10. At that time, the drones were destroyed by NATO forces.
The Russian Ministry of Defense denied any intentions to strike Polish territory, claiming that the targets of the attack were only objects of Ukraine’s military-industrial complex. Meanwhile, the Polish government is convinced that the incursion of drones into their territory was intentional, not an accidental incident.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, after a meeting of ambassadors from member countries of the alliance, emphasized solidarity with Poland and condemned Russia’s actions, highlighting the importance of collective security and unity.
