Zelensky stated that Orban is blocking Ukraine’s EU accession due to elections

Зеленський заявив, що Орбан блокує Україну в ЄС через вибори

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, during his speech in Copenhagen, stated that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is hindering Ukraine’s Euro-integration aspirations due to his own political interests related to the elections in Hungary.

“Yes, we have problems with Hungary. We can speak openly about this because Viktor Orban has elections. And I think this is unreasonable. Due to his elections, he is blocking the path of a great 40-million country to the EU,” he said in Copenhagen.

Orban’s position on European support for Ukraine

Viktor Orban has not commented on Zelensky’s statement, but he has repeatedly emphasized that Budapest will oppose the expansion of the European Union and NATO at Ukraine’s expense. In his social media post, the Hungarian Prime Minister stressed that he would not support providing financial assistance to Ukraine, particularly regarding the transfer of EU funds, financing military supplies, or using frozen Russian assets for the benefit of Ukraine.

After the summit in Copenhagen, Orban also commented on the idea of providing Ukraine with reparative loans from Russian assets, expressing disagreement with Belgium’s initiative regarding mutual responsibility among EU member states on this issue.

Election in Hungary and the political situation

The parliamentary elections in Hungary are scheduled for April next year. It is this new parliament that will form the future government of the country. Meanwhile, according to data from Bloomberg, in June 2025, the popularity of opposition forces in the country significantly increased, posing a real threat to Orban, who has led the government since 2010, of losing power.
