US Reaction to Russian Rhetoric

On August 1, Donald Trump stated that, considering Medvedev’s sharp remarks, who currently serves as Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia, he made the decision to increase the combat readiness of American submarine forces. Trump emphasized that the measures taken are intended to prevent possible unforeseen consequences that may arise from the aggressive rhetoric of Russian officials.

“Based on the extremely provocative statements of former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who is now the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, I have ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines in appropriate regions just in case these foolish and provocative statements turn out to be more than just words. Words are very important and can often lead to unforeseen consequences; I hope this will not be one of those cases.”

Medvedev’s Statements and the Kremlin’s Response

Dmitry Medvedev, responding to Trump’s criticism, emphasized that Russia will not change its policy and will continue to adhere to its chosen course. He also noted that if the words of the former Russian president provoke a “nervous reaction” in the current American leader, it confirms the correctness of Russia’s actions in his view.

Previously, Donald Trump harshly criticized Medvedev, who had earlier stated that the US president’s specific deadline for Russia regarding a peace agreement with Ukraine could lead to war between the US and Russia.

On July 29, Trump noted that the Russian Federation has 10 days to make progress in ending the war against Ukraine; otherwise, the United States will impose tariffs and other restrictive measures against Moscow. Trump also expressed his disappointment with Putin’s actions.

The Kremlin responded to these statements, indicating that they have taken them into account, and the spokesperson for the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, emphasized that Russia continues its so-called “special military operation” in Ukraine.

For his part, Medvedev stated that ultimatums from the US pose a threat and are a step towards direct military confrontation between the two countries. He stressed that Russia is not Israel or Iran, and each new ultimatum only raises the level of tension in US-Russia relations.
