Investigation into the Circumstances of the Tragedy at the Football Camp
The director of LLC “Benfica Football Academy Ukraine” has officially been charged in the case concerning the child’s death. According to the investigation, the tragedy occurred on August 3, 2023, at a football camp in the village of Khodosivka, Obukhiv district. During swimming in the lake, the children were left without proper supervision from the camp staff, which led to the drowning of the 10-year-old boy.
“The day after the tragedy, the camp coach, who was directly responsible for organizing the children’s activities, was informed of the charges under Part 3 of Article 135 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (leaving children in danger without supervision while in a body of water, resulting in the death of a minor due to drowning). In November 2023, the indictment was sent to court,” the statement reads.
Court Proceedings and New Charges
According to the Office of the Prosecutor General, the court proceedings were prolonged, but thanks to the persistence of the prosecution, the process was able to be expedited. Currently, the case is in the final stages of evidence examination.
During the pre-trial investigation, it was established that the director of the football academy violated the requirements of Ukrainian labor legislation regarding safety, as confirmed by the results of forensic examinations. This violation was the cause of the tragic incident. On September 1, 2025, she was charged under Part 2 of Article 271 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – violation of safety regulations leading to a person’s death.
Since the suspect is outside Ukraine, the procedure for her international search and extradition has been initiated to hold her accountable on the territory of Ukraine.
