UN Supports Diplomatic Initiatives
António Guterres noted the active role of the United States in seeking diplomatic avenues to end the conflict. He also highlighted the importance of direct negotiations between the delegations of Ukraine and the Russian Federation in Istanbul, which resulted in exchanges of prisoners of war.
“Progress towards achieving the desperately needed ceasefire and a lasting peace settlement remains painfully slow. Each day that fighting continues undermines the chances of diplomatic success and increases the risk of further escalation,” he said at the UN Security Council meeting on peace and security in Ukraine on Tuesday.
The UN Secretary-General urged not to lose the “current diplomatic momentum, however fragile it may be,” stressing the need to maintain the progress already made towards peace.
