How to Protect Consumer Rights During Black Friday: Tips from the State Consumer Service

У Держпродспоживслужбі розповіли, як захистити свої права в Чорну п’ятницю

During Black Friday, shoppers have the same rights to return and exchange products as they do at any other time, and advertisements for sales must be truthful and not misleading.

During mass sales, especially on Black Friday, Ukrainian consumers often encounter attractive offers. However, even on such days, no special promotional conditions should limit the legal rights of buyers. The State Consumer Service reminds consumers how to avoid falling victim to manipulations and what to pay attention to during seasonal discounts.

Advertising and Pricing Requirements During Sales

According to the Law of Ukraine on Consumer Protection, sellers are required to provide accurate and clear information about promotions, discounts, and the final price of goods. The price of a product during a sale must be lower than the usual price, and artificially inflating the original price to simulate a better discount is prohibited. Additionally, advertisements must not mislead consumers regarding the size of the discount, purchase conditions, or product availability.

  • Information about promotions and prices must be accurate and clear.
  • Sale items must be cheaper than usual.
  • It is unacceptable to inflate the original price to create the illusion of a larger discount.
  • Advertising materials must not mislead consumers about the conditions or availability of the product.

Returns, Exchanges, and Complaints in Case of Violations

Consumers have the full right to return or exchange promotional items, as well as to utilize warranty repairs under the same conditions as for full-price products. Statements such as “promotional items are non-returnable” are unlawful. For online orders, the rules of distance selling apply: items can be returned within 14 days unless they fall under the list of exceptions.

In case of violations, consumers have the right to contact the territorial body of the State Consumer Service in their region to protect their interests.

“When choosing purchases during sales, remember: a good price is not a reason to give up your rights!” – the service reminded.
