Community activists continue the fight to preserve the Zhytniy Market

The Mayor of Kyiv, Vitaliy Klychko, did not support the petition regarding granting the Zhytniy Market in Podil the status of a historical landmark. This has raised concerns among residents and activists who demand the protection of this modernist building from potential demolition.
The Mayor’s Decision and Public Reaction
The information about the denial was made public by heritage protector Dmytro Perov. He noted that a similar situation occurred with Andriy Zhuriya’s petition, which also concerned granting the market protective status and the issue of its privatization. According to Perov, this indicates the unwillingness of the city authorities to fully protect the historical heritage of the capital.
“Vitaliy Klychko rejected the petition to grant landmark status to the Zhytniy Market in Podil,” wrote Dmytro Perov.
Actions of Community Organizations and Next Steps
In March 2025, the community organization “Heritage” submitted the necessary documentation to the Department of Cultural Heritage Protection of the Kyiv City State Administration to grant the market the status of an architectural landmark. However, the department decided to develop its own document that would only provide for the preservation of certain elements of the building that they consider the most valuable. Activists emphasize that even this compromise option has not been implemented, as the relevant document has not come into effect.
Dmytro Perov stressed that the main problem for the mayor is precisely granting protective status to the building, as this would prevent its demolition in the future. Activists are calling on Kyiv residents and representatives of the authorities to preserve the unique architectural heritage of Podil.
