Residents of Kyiv are urging the authorities to abandon marshrutkas

A public initiative to completely ban marshrutkas is gaining momentum in the capital. Instead of private minibuses, city dwellers propose implementing modern trams and electric buses on urban routes that meet contemporary standards for comfort and environmental sustainability.
Petition Supporting Transport Reform
The relevant electronic petition has already been posted on the official portal of the Kyiv City Council. The initiators emphasize that marshrutkas are a relic of the 1990s and no longer meet the needs of a modern city.
Main Complaints About Marshrutkas
The authors of the petition highlight a number of serious shortcomings in the operation of marshrutkas. In particular, they point out the unsatisfactory technical condition of the vehicles, the lack of air conditioning, and the fact that drivers often do not undergo proper checks. Capital residents also emphasize that marshrutka owners ignore passenger service rules and fail to provide an adequate level of communication.
Another important issue is the lack of transparency in the bidding process for route servicing, which creates conditions for corruption. Moreover, the funds received from passengers are often not officially accounted for, facilitating tax evasion.
“Marshrutka owners do not adhere to passenger transport conditions: the condition of the vehicles is terrible, they lack air conditioning, and no one properly checks the drivers.”
Citizens are calling on the Kyiv city authorities to reform public transport and transition to modern, safe, and transparent transportation systems.
