Law enforcement agencies have initiated a lawsuit against the owner of the historical building — the ‘Mykola Demydov Store’, located in Podil, Kyiv. According to the prosecutor’s demands, the owner will be required to restore this local architectural monument at 16/5 Petar Sahaydachny Street to proper condition.

History and Significance of the Building

The ‘Mykola Demydov Store’ was built in 1815 in the neoclassical style and is part of an ancient urban estate in Podil. For over one and a half centuries, the building was used as a commercial space where iron products, dishes, and various goods were sold. In the 1980s, it housed a bakery, but in recent decades, the building has not been in use and is gradually deteriorating.

Condition of the Monument and Public Reaction

As noted by law enforcement, the owner has taken no measures to preserve the building over the past 17 years, creating a risk of complete loss of this valuable cultural heritage object. For many years, the building was covered by a banner with a restoration passport, but access to it was unavailable. In early March 2025, it became known that there is no longer a historical building behind the banner, and a concrete monolith of a new building has appeared in its place.

“The Podil District Prosecutor’s Office of Kyiv has filed a lawsuit demanding that the building’s owner fulfill the terms of the preservation agreement and restore the local architectural monument — the ‘Mykola Demydov Store’, located at 16/5 Petar Sahaydachny Street in Kyiv,” the statement reads.

At the same time, the director of the Department of Cultural Heritage of the Kyiv City State Administration, Marina Solovyova, previously stated that the information about the destruction of the monument is inaccurate; however, no real actions have been taken by the department regarding its restoration.
