Kyiv Theater Actors Demand the Dismissal of the Director of the Department of Culture

Актори київського театру вимагають звільнити директора Департаменту культури

Employees of the capital’s Young Theater insist on the dismissal of the head of the Department of Culture of the Kyiv City State Administration, Serhiy Anzhiyak. They believe that his removal is necessary to overcome systemic problems in the cultural sector and to combat corruption. This demand has become particularly relevant in light of the scandals involving the theater’s management and officials.

High-Profile Scandals and Collective Demands

The staff of the Young Theater supports the petition for the dismissal of Serhiy Anzhiyak and the theater’s artistic director, Andriy Bilous. The latter is suspected of harassment towards female students and actresses, and a criminal case has already been opened against him. The petition, published at the end of April, has gathered over 6000 signatures and has become a symbol of protest against injustice.

«We cannot dismiss him, so let’s live in harmony and forget everything. And in general, it’s all slander — respect each other,» – this was the position expressed by Serhiy Anzhiyak during a meeting with the theater staff, denying the accusations against Bilous.

Despite the public outcry and the demands of the staff, the Department of Culture refused to terminate Bilous’s contract. According to reports, he left the position voluntarily, receiving all due payments and compensations. Meanwhile, discussions continue in the cultural sector regarding the need to strengthen ethical standards and combat violence.

Prospects and Systemic Changes

The theater employees emphasize that the problem lies not only with specific individuals but also in systemic shortcomings. They continue to demand real changes from the authorities and cultural leadership, particularly the approval of mandatory clauses regarding adherence to ethical standards in the contracts of leaders. This should be a step towards creating a safe and transparent cultural environment.
