The Kyiv Zoo has completed the renovation of the walking area for its large Galápagos tortoises, in accordance with the latest recommendations from the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria. According to the caretakers, the new space has been designed with the animals’ needs in mind to ensure their comfort and high-quality care conditions.

Modern Conditions for Beloved Residents

From now on, the tortoises Matilda, Uncle Sasha, and Cheburek have access to a spacious area of nearly 400 square meters. The territory features green lawns, shaded canopies with infrared heating, clean sand, stone grottos, and automatic water dispensers. This allows the animals to spend more time outdoors, enjoy sunbathing, and feel as natural as possible.

“Thus, our Matilda, Uncle Sasha, and Cheburek have received an almost 400-square-meter natural space with green grass, shaded canopies with infrared heating, fresh sand, stone grottos, and automatic water dispensers,” shared the zoo staff.

Diet and Opportunity to Observe Feeding

Matilda weighs 49 kg, Cheburek weighs 51 kg, and Uncle Sasha weighs 74 kg, and they regularly stroll through the updated area, enjoying the sun and their favorite dishes. Their diet mainly consists of leafy greens, Chinese cabbage, juicy watermelons, as well as other vitamin- and mineral-rich vegetables and fruits.

Zoo visitors can observe the tortoise feeding process every weekend at 12:00 near the end of the hoofed animal row, in front of the Elephant House. This is a great opportunity to get closer to the unusual residents of the capital’s zoo and learn more about their care.
